Musical Adventures on the Fringe

Festival Mozaic's Fringe Series
At Festival Mozaic’s Fringe Series, classically-trained musicians become unhinged from tradition and cavort through the musical worlds of jazz, Latin, Eastern European folk, Cabaret and Rock and Roll, resulting in musical hybrids that defy categorization and delight the imagination.

A guitar and cello, both acoustic and blazingly electric, create the full spectrum of an orchestra crossed with the energy of a rock band. A “new acoustic” sound emanates from this duo’s pairings of cello, six-string electric cello, Spanish/classical guitar, and steel string guitar. With an astonishing and artfully-rendered repertoire from Pink Floyd and Rush to Vivaldi, House of the Rising Sun and Bach, they have been featured from NPR to the Travel Channel and delight audiences across the nation.

String Theory

The bucolic site of See Canyon’s beautiful Fruit Ranch becomes a gigantic musical instrument as these imaginative musicians transform structures and natural landscapes by stringing and playing long harps across distances intimate and vast. The long harps integrate a visual and musical experience, infusing an eclectic mix of violin, cello, woodwinds and percussion with an indescribable sound. String Theory has ‘strung up’ their long harps to sites across the world, as diverse as the American Museum of Natural History, rock formations in the Sonoran Desert and the outside of Disney Hall for its grand opening.

Vagabond Opera - BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND

From Standing-Room-Only performances at the 2007 Festival, this group of musical rabble-rousers returns to deliver their eclectic mix of original and traditional compositions, unified by an old-world mood. Gut-bucket swing, tangos, Paris hot jazz, Ukrainian folk-punk ballads, Klezmer, operatic arias and vigorous originals mingle with an Absurdist, Bohemian Cabaret style, all played with skill, exuberance and a gritty Vagabond edge.
“These neo-cabaret fire starters roll out a rabble-rousing vision of globalization, 1920s-style”.

Multi-Talents in an Age of Specialization
Wednesday, July 16 2PM
Cal Poly Music Building, Room 218
American classical training is often so specialized that it leaves little room to explore and master more than a single instrument. The musicians of Quartetto Gelato, who between them are virtuosos of seven different instruments, demonstrate their unique approach to creating music that reflects their many musical skills.

San Luis Obispo County’s own Café Musique segues from the Fringe Series into the Classical Festival with their unique arrangements of gypsy, tango, classical, swing, waltzes and virtually anything else that captures the imagination.
