Ludwig v.Beethoven Serenade in D, op. 25
Although the musical forces are compact in an enchanting combination of flute, violin and viola, this charming serenade hearkens directly back to the great serenades by Mozart.
Johannes Brahms String Quartet No. 1 in c Minor, op. 51/1
So overwhelmed by the staggering quartet output of Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven and Schubert, it took Brahms thirteen years to complete this quartet, destroying over twenty versions in the process before arriving at this masterpiece. Influenced by Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony in its key, depth and concision, this is a profound work of genius.
Antonin Dvorak String Sextet in A, op. 48
Brahms was a champion of the young Dvorak and here, Dvorak pays him tribute in this lush sextet that blends the rollicking folk idioms of Dvorak’s Slavonic dances with the Viennese lyricism brought to its pinnacle by Brahms.
